Biography

Dr. Rajendra Kumar Munian is an assistant professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Ropar. He completed his B. Tech and M.Tech (Dual degree) from the department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kharagpur (2007-2012). He then moved to Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and joined as a Ph.D. Research Scholar in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. His doctoral research was on modelling and simulation of guided wave propagation in composite structures with defects using time domain spectral finite element method, which has application in guided wave based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). He submitted his thesis in 2017 and successfully defended in 2018. After that he continued in IISc as a research associate. As a research associate he worked in a number of research fields which include impact dynamic responses of metallic structures, nonlinear contact dynamic induced vibration and its application in vibro-thermography, and simulation of structural health monitoring system. In July 2021, he moved to IIT Kanpur, where he worked as a research associate. In IIT Kanpur, he worked on designing novel metamaterials with enhanced bandgap. Other important research activities included experimental study of probabilistic behaviour of walking drops on vibrating liquid bath, and modelling neuron using electro-mechanical coupled physics to study action potential propagation in axon. He has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Ropar since August 2022. His areas of expertise are solid mechanics, structural dynamics and Computational mechanics. With this expertise he takes interests to branch out his research activity in the fields of mechanical science with the intention of providing state of the art solutions to various industrial problems. His research interests include Vibration Control, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Modelling and simulation of elasto-dynamic responses of metallic and composite structures, dynamic failure mechanism of material under high velocity impact load, and designing novel meta-structures.
